Dogs of War

If you're a dog owner like me, this list of qualities will be familiar; playfulness, loyalty, energy and of course, unconditional love.

No surprise then that pilots on both sides of the divide during WWII owned dogs.

Perhaps the most famous was 'Flash', an Alsatian owned by FS George 'Grumpy' Unwin of the RAF's 19 Sqn. Flash appears in numerous photographs and is even available as a cuddly toy from the Cabinet War Rooms in London (last I visited - 2019).

I've spent many hours on Pinterest collecting as many images as I can find of the dogs owned by wartime pilots; I think the photographs speak to how much opponents in war can sometimes have in common.

Head over to my Pinterest to check it out and let me know if you have a particular favourite - I'm not sure I can choose! They're all fantastic!
